Cupcakes are FUN!
Cupcakes-A-Go-Go began as a hobby and then a dream, with founder Laura DeVries baking cupcakes for friends and family. When word spread of her delicious treats, Laura had to use her creativity to find a location in which to work because she could not afford to lease a retail space and purchase equipment, and the community in which she lived did not have a commercial shared kitchen. She found another nearby bakery who would sub-lease space to her and her partner, Wade Stewart, where they worked for 2 additional years, growing the business by catering events, fulfilling direct orders, vending at farmers markets and wholesaling to local markets. During the 2 years that they grew the business, Wade handled the business during the day while Laura continued to work full time. She worked evenings and weekends for 2 years until October of 2011 when her full-time job was eliminated.
Laura and Wade sought the assistance of SCORE to help with their business plan, and later worked with WWBIC (Wisconsin Women's Business Initiative Corporation) and the University of Wisconsin Small Business Development Corporation - all of whom provided guidance and input during the development of their business plan. WWBIC provided funding for the opening of their retail store in November of 2011.
Since opening just six months ago, the couple has added 17 jobs and they continue to grow. They also opened their doors to another fledgling food entrepreneur to "pay it forward" so that another small business might have the same opportunity that they had. They are currently working with WWBIC and the UW SBDC on an expansion plan.
