Ahtna's 8(a) Success: Restoring a People

Ahtna, Incorporated is an Alaska Native Regional Corporation established by Congress under terms of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971. Since its formation 40 years ago, Ahtna, Inc. has made great strides in becoming a group of self-sufficient, successful villages that provides economic opportunity to our shareholders while still maintaining our unique cultural heritage.

The Native 8(a) program, as provided by the SBA, has been a vitally important piece of legislation that has helped to make the stability and prosperity of our people possible. Through it, companies owned by our shareholders – the Ahtna Athabascan people of the Cantwell and Copper River regions of south-central Alaska – have developed into successful businesses whose profits are then re-invested into our villages, providing numerous economic and cultural benefits.

The Ahtna, Inc. Vision Statement is: Our Culture Unites Us; Our Land Sustains Us; Our People are Prosperous. The Native 8(a) Program allows us to bring this vision to reality by providing work and wages, as well as strengthening Ahtna’s cultural identity, on behalf of more than 1,700 shareholders.
